"Sybaga" is a special share for close and honored guests

In Kazakh tradition, it was customary to set aside a portion of the festive meal in advance for someone who, for whatever reason, was unable to attend the dastarkhan. This portion was called "sybaga" and was considered a sign of special respect for a relative or honored guest.

This custom was especially evident during the winter meat harvest. After slaughtering the cattle, the hosts distributed the best portions among family members, always remembering loved ones living far away, married daughters, matchmakers, and other relatives. Meat and traditional delicacies were set aside separately for them. Later, this portion could be given home or a special invitation for the person.

Sybaga was also prepared for someone who was unable to attend the family celebration. Their absence did not mean they had been forgotten. The hosts kept the allotted treat until the next meeting. This way, the person knew they were expected, remembered, and still a part of the family and the shared celebration.
The size and composition of this share depended on the guest's age, status, and degree of kinship. The more honored the guest, the more careful the selection of food. In the traditional system of butchering meat, different parts of the carcass also had their own significance and were intended for specific guests.

Sybaga occupied a special place for relatives living far away. During the meat preparation process, kazy, zhal, zhaya, and other best parts might be left for them, and then passed on at a convenient opportunity. Sometimes a person would be invited with the promise that their share was waiting for them at home.

This seemingly simple custom held an important principle: a loved one should not be excluded from the shared joy simply because they were far away or unable to attend.

Today, the tradition has survived primarily in families, where it is still customary to share meat after slaughter or a festive feast. However, its main meaning extends far beyond food. Sybaga is a way to show someone that they are remembered, respected, and always considered one of their own.
