"Besikke salu" - the ritual of placing a baby in a cradle

"Besikke salu" is an ancient Kazakh ritual associated with the birth of a child. It is held at the moment when the baby is first placed in the "besik" - a traditional Kazakh rocking cradle. People say that "besik" is the golden nest of the baby, and therefore this ritual occupies a special place among family celebrations.

The festive event is accompanied by a rich dastarkhan, invitation of guests, songs and good wishes, and is often called "Besik toy" - a holiday on the occasion of putting a child in a cradle.

The cradle is carefully prepared: it is decorated with bright ribbons, new blankets, pillows, feather beds. According to tradition, the "besik" is brought by the grandmother on the mother's side, thereby emphasizing the connection between generations. The first time the task of putting the baby in the cradle is entrusted to an experienced, respected woman - usually a grandmother or a woman who enjoys special authority. This is considered a great honor.

Before putting the baby to bed, the ritual of fumigating the besik with smoke is performed, which should drive away evil spirits and protect the child from the evil eye. Then a cheerful and symbolic ritual is performed - "Tyshtyrma". Candies, kurt and sweets are passed through the hole in the bottom of the cradle, intended for the pot, saying: "Tyshty! Tyshty!" - as if calling for prosperity and well-being to the house, which come with the birth of a child. The sweets are caught by the guests and distributed to the children so that the joy of birth is shared by everyone.
After this, the baby is carefully swaddled and placed in the cradle, and the women present sing a lullaby - "Besik zhyry", filling the atmosphere with kind words, warmth and love.
