For the Kazakh people, choosing a name for a child has always meant far more than simply fulfilling a tradition. A name was seen as the first blessing and wish bestowed upon a newborn, which is why great thought and care were given to choosing it.

Names with beautiful and meaningful interpretations were especially valued. A child might be named after a famous or respected person, with the hope that they would inherit that person’s finest qualities and grow into someone worthy of their name.

Often, the right to choose the child’s name was given to an elder in the family — a grandmother, grandfather, or another respected relative. The season, important events in the family’s life, how long-awaited the child was, and the parents’ hopes and wishes might all be taken into consideration. As a result, many traditional names expressed wishes for health, longevity, strength, prosperity, or a happy destiny.

The giving of a name is also connected with a religious ritual. After the child was born, an elder or respected person would recite the azan and then pronounce the baby’s name several times near the child’s ear. In this way, the name was not merely announced to the family — it was solemnly bestowed upon the child and accompanied by heartfelt wishes for a good life.

The meaning of this tradition has endured to the present day. Parents still take their time when choosing a name, learning about its origins and meaning, and discussing different options with older family members. For some, preserving family heritage and continuity is important; for others, it is about finding a rare or beautiful name; and for many, it is a way of expressing a particular wish for their child’s future.

That is why the tradition of naming a child can be seen as one of the very first expressions of love and care for their future. Long before a child is able to make their own choices, parents and elders have already begun to express, through a name, their hopes for the child’s character, destiny, and journey through life.
