Tungyshbai Al-Tarazi

Tungyshbay Kadyruly Zhamankulov (Al-Tarazi) – Soviet and Kazakh film and theater actor, theater teacher, director, candidate of art history, professor.

Born on October 2, 1948, in the village of Abai, Baizak district, Zhambyl region, Kazakh SSR. In 1973, he graduated from the Almaty State Institute of Arts named after Kurmangazy (now the Kazakh National Academy of Arts T. K. Zhurgenova).

After graduation, he was accepted into the troupe of the Kazakh State Academic Drama Theater named after M. Auezova, where from

1993 to 2001 he held the position of director and artistic head. Since 1974 he has been engaged in teaching activities in various universities in Almaty.

In 1982 awarded title of Honored Artist of the Kazakh SSR, in 1992 became People's Artist of Kazakhstan.

Performed many roles, among which Syrym ("Karagoz" M. Auezova), Zhalmukhan ("Akan Seri — Aktoqty" G. Musrepova), Demesin ("Ushkentai aul" D. Isabekova), Brut ("Julius Caesar" W. Shakespeare", Abylay Khan ("Abylay Khan" A. Kekilbaeva). Also staged the plays "Turandot Khanshayim" (K. Gozzi), "Tuzdy went" (M. Gaparov), “Tomiris” (Shakhimarden).

He starred in several dozen feature films.

Since 1983 – member of the Union of Cinematographers of the USSR. Chairman of the Union of Theater Workers of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

Winner of the Lenin Komsomol Prize of Kazakhstan (1980). Awarded a diploma of the Supreme Council of the Kazakh SSR, medal "Astana" (1998), Order "Parasat" (2008), Order "Dostyk" II degree (2015), honorary badge "For merits in the development of culture and art" (2015, Interparliamentary Assembly CIS), Order “Barys” III degree (2023). Laureate “Stars of the Commonwealth” (2024).

Tungyshbai Zhamankulov remains one of the iconic figures of Kazakh theater and cinema.
