Issyk. Cradle of nomadic civilization

The state historical and cultural reserve-museum “Esik” was created in 1970 on the territory of the Issyk necropolis, where the world-famous burial of the Saki prince was discovered.
The famous “Golden Man” was found and discovered by archaeologist Bekmukhanbet Nurmukhanbetov in the vicinity of the city of Issyk in 1970. The costume of the Saka prince contains about 4,000 gold jewelry of more than 70 types. The Golden Man is an example of the high skill of the ancient Sakas, their subtle artistic taste, evidence of mastery of complex metal processing technologies. The Issyk Golden Man is the national symbol of Kazakhstan. Elements from his costume are included in the sketch of the country's State Emblem.
This territory, located in the foothills of the Trans-Ili Alatau, was inhabited more than two thousand years ago by a people whom the Persians called “Sakas” and the Greeks called “Scythians”. The significance of the burial of the Saka prince, striking in its wealth and content, lies in the fact that it has survived to this day without being plundered. The finds discovered there provided invaluable information about the ancient nomads of Kazakhstan.
Currently, the exhibition halls of the museum-reserve display more than 500 artifacts dating from the late Paleolithic to the Middle Ages, most of which relate to the history of the Saka era. In addition to original artifacts, visitors can touch pottery shards from different eras, assemble a puzzle depicting the crown of the Golden Man, take home copies of rock paintings, etc. The museum also has interactive areas.
The museum-reserve is located in the city of Issyk, 50 km from Almaty. You can get to the museum along the Kuldzhinsky tract.
