Tolagay

Once upon a time, along a great river, lived a renowned hunter named Sarzhan Tomanyushuly. He had a wife named Aisulu. One day, Aisulu gave birth to a son. Overjoyed, the parents gathered the people, held a grand feast, and named the baby Tolagay.

The child grew up to be extraordinary. He matured quickly, growing not by months, but by days. By the age of four, he was as strong as a true warrior. And by the age of seven, there was no one who could wrestle with him. He went hunting with his father and stood out with his marksmanship.

One year, a severe drought struck the land. No rain fell, and the earth became parched. Grass withered, and livestock began to perish. People also suffered from thirst. One day, Tolagay, looking at his mother sheltering in the yurt from the heat, asked:
– Mother, is there a place where rain falls abundantly and the land is fertile?

Then his mother recalled a wondrous place she had seen in her youth.
– Far away, there are majestic mountains that touch the sky. Rain often falls there, the grass is lush, and nature is beautiful. That place is called Tarbagatay, – she recounted at length.

Hearing this, Tolagay decided to find a way to save his people. He traveled a long way and reached the mountains with snow-capped peaks touching the sky. Among those mountains, he saw a beautiful mountain whose summit was covered by clouds, with dense forests and singing birds. Tolagay embraced that mountain, lifted it with all his might, and carried it on his back towards his homeland.

One day, the people saw a huge mountain moving from a distance. As they looked closer, it was Tolagay carrying it on his back.

At that moment, black clouds covered the sky, and lightning flashed. Thunder roared, and the long-awaited rain began to pour. The overjoyed people
shouted "Tolagay! Tolagay!" and welcomed the hero. The withered steppe revived, and grass grew green. Cattle mooed, and animals chirped. However, the exhausted hero could not emerge from under the mountain and could only utter the single word "Mother!" before remaining forever under the mountain.

The mother, having lost her hero, wept bitterly. The people mourned, and it is said that even the mountain could not bear the sorrow and its tears flowed as springs. Tears flowed from his eyes as springs. Since then, this mountain has been called Tolagay.
