Mukagali Makataev is one of the brightest and most talented poets of Kazakhstan, whose works have become a reflection of the soul of the people. His work is imbued with sincerity, love of life and philosophical reflections on the fate of man.
Born in 1931 in the village of Karasaz Alma-Ata region. He worked as a teacher, a journalist, a radio announcer, and later as a literary consultant for the Writers' Union of Kazakhstan. He began writing poetry from a young age, and the poem “Appassionata” brought him fame. (1962), after which his name joined the ranks of the best Kazakh poets.
His poetry – is a combination melody, depth and simplicity, understandable to every reader. He is the author of the collections “Hello, Friends,” “My Swallow,” “Swans Don’t Sleep,” “Poem of Life,” and many others. In his works, Makataev sang love, nature, native land, reflected on the meaning of life and the inevitability of time. Many of his poems became songs that live among the people.
Makataev was also involved in translations: Thanks to him, Kazakh readers became acquainted with the works of Walt Whitman, William Shakespeare and Dante. His translation of The Divine Comedy is recognized as one of the best interpretations of this great work.
Despite the fact that his life was short, Makataev’s work left an indelible mark on Kazakh literature. His poems continue to inspire, finding a response in the hearts of people of all generations.
