Mangystau region is located to the East side of the Caspian Sea on the Mangyshlak plateau (Mangystau), bordered in the Northeast with Atyrau and Aktobe regions, in the South with Turkmenistan and in the East with the Republic of Karakalpakstan of Uzbekistan. This is an industrial region of Kazakhstan, where 25 percent of the republic’s oil is extracted. In addition, the Mangystau region is known for the “Sea gate” of Kazakhstan – Aktau city.
The region is washed by the Caspian Sea.
Major cities of the region: Aktau and Zhanaozen.
