Andras Sandorfy: “Bread, as a symbol of well-being”
The Kazakhs and Hungarians are kindred nations, who have been united by strong friendly ties over the centuries. Our language, customs and culture are similar. At present, the descendants of the Kipchak tribes, who migrated to Europe from the Torgai steppes in the Middle Ages, live in the territory of Hungary, which is a matter of pride for us. It is noteworthy that the current Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban is of the Kipchak origin.

Our joint efforts contribute to the dynamic development of the Kazakh-Hungarian integration in all spheres. In the recent years, about US$330 million of the Hungarian investments have been invested in Kazakhstan, of which almost a quarter occurred in 2021-2022. The trade turnover between our countries has increased by 24 percent, and it is projected to reach US$1 billion in the near future.

Hungary occupies an important place in Kazakhstan’s trade and economic relations among the European Union countries, which underlines the importance of our cooperation for both countries.

Andras Sandorfy – representative of the company for the production of cereals and cereal products from Hungary. This is not his first visit to Kazakhstan and he knows the entire production process in agribusiness. The Hungarian businessman shared his opinion that such meetings and negotiations provide a unique opportunity to strengthen the practical business ties and expand cooperation in the agro-food sector between Kazakhstan and the European Union countries. Andras Sandorfy has told our publication about his company and the prospects of partnership with Kazakhstan.

Qazaq Culture: What types of cereals and cereal products, produced in Hungary, do you consider the most perspective for export to Kazakhstan?

Andras Sandorfy: We came from Hungary, a country with a 120-year history of seed cultivation. Kazakhstan is known for its agricultural potential, and its neighboring countries, with a total population of over 250 million people, are in need of healthy foods as well. It all starts with the seeds. The Hungarian seed producers strive for high quality wheat, which ensures a good harvest. In the context of climate change, such as the recent floods in Kazakhstan, the sustainable genetic resources are important. The Hungarian seeds can help Kazakhstan to withstand the environmental challenges and ensure the stable harvests.

Qazaq Culture: How do you see the adaptation of these products into the Kazakh market, taking into account the local tastes and food traditions?

Andras Sandorfy: Before we start to use the seeds in the new areas, of course, it’s necessary to test them. In Kazakhstan, we talk about 20 million hectares of cereal crops. Earlier, we conducted the tests for the Hungarian seeds in different regions of Kazakhstan for at least minimum two years, before we were starting to sell them. The results of these tests allow us to adapt the seeds to local conditions and needs, so that, they meet the expectations of the Kazakh farmers.

Qazaq Culture: What do you know about the cultural traditions and preferences between the Kazakh and Hungarian people?

Andras Sandorfy: Historically, the Hungarian and Kazakh people have the common roots, and our peoples had lived together in the ancient times. We are proud of our traditions and common culture. For example, we have many common words that are used in both languages. Both nations value the bread, not only as a daily meal, but also, as a symbol of well-being. This cultural connection helps us to understand each other better and cooperate in the field of agriculture.

Qazaq Culture: What measures do you take to ensure the product quality and safety at all stages of the production?

Andras Sandorfy: Before we start selling the seeds to the Kazakh farmers, we conduct several stages of quality control. Kazakhstan’s Institute makes the initial control, knowing our product and the production conditions. The second stage is the state control, carried out by Kazakhstan’s Institute. The third stage is the certification and control by the official body of Kazakhstan, which certifies the quality and yield of seeds, ensuring the high standards of product.

Qazaq Culture: Do you plan to conduct the informational campaigns for the Kazakh consumers and business partners on the benefits of the Hungarian cereals and cereal products?

Andras Sandorfy: Yes, it is necessary, and it is a natural process. We have already started the supplies and we are conducting the informational campaigns. It bears noting that the major agricultural fair was held in Astana, where we presented our products. We publish the informational articles to highlight the benefits of our seeds, and the Kazakh suppliers actively advertise them among farmers.

Qazaq Culture: How would you briefly describe your product?

Andras Sandorfy: “Without seeds, there is no life”. It all starts with sowing the seeds, then there is the cultivation process, and finally, the harvesting of the yield. Our products, such as the small seeds, may contain the hundreds or thousands of seeds, depending on the cooking process. We ensure the high quality and productivity, so that, the farmers can get the most out of their labor. In addition, they can definitely enjoy their results, and thus, their life.

It bears to remind that for the first time, a High-level Agri-food Mission from the EU, headed by the European Commissioner Janusz Wojciechowski, is visiting Kazakhstan from May 27 to 31 of 2024.
