"State collection of unique bowed musical instruments" in the Central State Museum of the Republic of Kazakhstan

With the development of the violin school in Kazakhstan and the emergence of international musicians, there is a need to purchase high-quality Italian instruments by masters of the 17th and 18th centuries.

In this regard, in August 1986, the Government of the Republic of Kazakhstan established the State Collection of Unique Bowed Musical Instruments as the department of unique bowed musical instruments at the Republican Museum of Folk Instruments named after him. The Atlas.


The purpose of creating a State collection of unique bowed musical instruments was and remains to provide instruments to talented young people to participate in international competitions and leading master performers for concert activities.

- identification, study, preservation, restoration of unique bowed musical instruments: violins, violas, cellos, double basses and bows of violin makers from different countries, schools, eras, which have national and world cultural significance, and their use in musical and instrumental performance practice;

- conducting an examination of bowed musical instruments when exporting them abroad;

- registration of passports for individuals and legal entities when passing through customs when leaving the Republic of Kazakhstan;

For 37 years, the richest stock collection has been formed. In total, the State Collection has 20 exhibits totaling 559 million tenge, which are part of the National Museum Fund of the Republic of Kazakhstan. All instruments are included in the State Register of the Republic of Kazakhstan and are the Property of the Republic of Kazakhstan. 

The State Collection contains bowed instruments of outstanding masters of the 17th and 18th centuries of the Italian school (12 instruments), the Tyrolean school (1 instrument), the Vienna school (1 instrument), 5 violin bows and 1 cello bow. 

The fund of Italian instruments of masters of the 17th - 18th centuries is currently represented in the state collection mainly by four schools (Cremona, Venice, Milan and Bologna).

The Cremona School is represented by five instruments (violins): Stradivarius–1, Amati -1, Guarneri -3.

The Venetian school is represented by three instruments: one cello and one violin by master Santo Serafin and a violin by master Pietro Guarneri (Venetian).

The Milan school is represented by one violin by the master Giovanni Battista Guadanini.

The Bologna School is also represented by one violin by master Matteo Minozzi.


The state collection also has two instruments by the master Vincenzo Panormo of the Neapolitan school. This is a violin and viola from the late 18th century, which were made in the London period.


There are also two violins by an unknown Viennese master and an unknown Italian master. 


In Soviet times, the search and purchase of tools was carried out on the territory of the USSR, for the purchase of which the state allocated funds from the budget (the last time allocations were made in 2006). 


The pride of the State Collection is the cello of the Italian master Santo Serafin, which is one of the ten cellos made by the master and which have been preserved in the world to this day. 


- The violin of the Italian master Omobono Stradivari, played by A. Musakhodzhayeva, glorifying the Republic of Kazakhstan around the world. 

- The violin of the Italian master Guarneri, playing which M. Bisengaliev became the winner of the competition named after him. Bach in Germany. 


Violins by Italian masters Guadania, Amati, Ponormo, Albani, Minozzi, etc., where students of the Kazakh National Conservatory annually become laureates of international competitions.Kurmangazy and the Kazakh National University of Arts. 


In the music market of the republic, only the State Collection provides this type of service, providing talented young people with tools to participate in international competitions and outstanding performing musicians to participate in concert activities. In addition, at present, in the post-Soviet space, state collections have been preserved only in Russia and Kazakhstan. 


The creator of the State Collection is Kapeu Bulat Tleukhanovich, who has been its permanent director since the first day of its creation to the present. The head of the RSE "State Collection of unique bowed Musical Instruments" performs the general management of the enterprise, being an expert of bowed musical instruments, heads the expert council of the State Collection and personally conducts an examination of bowed musical instruments exported outside the Republic of Kazakhstan.
