Underground mosque of Beket Ata

The underground mosque of Beket Ata is one of the most unique and interesting architectural sights of Kazakhstan. 

Beket Ata is an underground mosque of the XVIII century, an architectural monument, a sacred sacred place and a place of pilgrimage on Mangyshlak in the Oglandy gorge. 

Description. The mosque consists of 5 rooms, a large recreation area is made in front of the entrance to the mosque. The front door is low and narrow. The first room is a domed structure with an oval ceiling. On its western side there is a prayer room, the mihrab which faces south. 

In the southeast, in one of the two rooms, there is the burial of Beket Ata. There is a Bakan tree in this room. The shape of the rooms is rounded, the height varies from 2.7 to 3.5 meters. There are niches for candlesticks on the walls. The mosque has its own caretaker, who meets people, conducts excursions, tells the rules of behavior in the mosque. 

There is a new mosque nearby. It was built in 1999 and got its name in honor of the famous Sufi religious figure and mythological personality Beket Ata.

Beket Ata earned the worship and respect of the region's population with his good deeds, amazing predictions and spiritual deeds.

What makes this mosque so special is that it is completely placed inside the ground. The entrance to the mosque is located in a grotto that is cut into the rock. The lower part of the mosque resembles a cave, and the upper part goes out and protrudes slightly above ground level.


Inside the Beket Ata Mosque, you can find ornate prayer halls, including the main hall for common prayers, which is used during holidays and other solemn ceremonies. The interior of the mosque is made in a traditional style using Kazakh motifs and ornaments.

Many visitors who come to this mosque note the special atmosphere of the place, the unique acoustics. She radiates peace and quiet, creating an atmosphere for meditation and relaxation. Many believers gather here to pray and venerate Saint Beket Ata.
