The history of creation.On January 19, 1920, the district department of Public Education was established as an extracurricular branch of the Guryev Revolutionary Committee.

The department has been divided into three divisions and the temporary staff of the central library is being introduced. From this moment on, the central library starts analyzing books and compiling a complete catalog.

On May 15, 1926, this library was transformed into a county library throughout the city, and the book collection totaled 5,600 copies of books.

In 1927, the Ural Provincial Center for Political Education approved a decree on the library. The resolution states that "the demand for books has increased in the library, there is a shortage of books, the number of copies per month is 1,526 copies."A decision was made to open the central library on June 13, 1927.

In 1953, the internal departments of the regional library were replenished. The library had two subscription departments, a reading room, a mobile library, an auto book, and six employees. In June 1957, a methodological office was established in the regional library to provide methodological assistance to district and rural libraries, and to disseminate best practices.

At the beginning of 1959, departments for processing and replenishing the book collection and bibliography were organized. Since the first year of its establishment, the Scientific and Methodological Department has supervised the work of libraries in the region, provided methodological assistance, as well as conducted courses, internships, workshops and meetings to improve the professionalism and knowledge of librarians.

In May 2002, at the republican conference "Corporate Catologization of the Republic of Kazakhstan" in the National Library, issues on the RABIS library program, its use, and integration were discussed. In this regard, the library is working to integrate the electronic catalog with the libraries of the republic, promoting products via the Internet. 

In 2009, the library was located in a new building that opened in the "Nursaya" microdistrict of Atyrau.

The total collection of the library is 2,546,476 copies

The number of rare manuscripts stored in the library is -348. The chronological period covers the period from 1873 to 1945.


Atyrau Regional Children's Library

The regional children's Library was opened on May 19, 1966 by the decision of the executive committee of the Guryev Regional Council. In 1971, the institution opened in a new building, built according to a standard design, located on Abai Square.

The total collection of the library is 129,620 copies.

Of these, 32,929 are in the state language. The number of newspapers is 16, including 12 in the Kazakh language. The number of magazines is 43, including 32 in the Kazakh language.
