Almaty Regional Central Universal Library

The history of the library was founded in 1936, and since 1946 it has been the district library of the Frunzensky district of the Almaty region.

Since 1949, it has been renamed the Almaty Regional Library on the basis of the rural library of the settlement "Malaya Stanitsa" in Almaty. The first address of the library is Alma-Ata, Malaya Stanitsa, Budennogo Street, house 30, then a small building in the Medeu district of Almaty, Poletaeva Street, house 53.

Since March 1953, the regional library has been transferred to the Department of Culture of the Almaty region.

In December 1962, the regional library was renamed the Almaty Regional Economic Library and became part of the regional department of Agricultural Culture.

Since December 1964, departments of the Department of Industry and Agriculture have been added, which have since received their name "Almaty Regional Library".

The library was the center for coordinating the work of district libraries and systematic methodological and practical assistance to district libraries. Innovations and achievements included in the library business of the Almaty region replaced each other in the practice of librarians, defining, distributing, introducing new progressive forms of work in the practice of regional library activities.

In the period from 1964 to 1970, the number of libraries in the region changed several times. The Almaty Regional Library held regional seminars, conferences and other events to reach the population of the region with library activities, which took place across the republic.

On January 1, 1973, the library of the Almaty region included 450 public libraries. Of these, the number of libraries in the state system is 425.

From 1978 to 1980, a centralized library system was established in the region. The book fund amounted to 3 million 401 thousand 302 copies. The Almaty Regional Universal Scientific Library took an active part in all-Union seminars on librarianship, conferences, events "Library and Book Trade", "Library and Publishing Houses", research, circulations, practical classes, all-Union research works "Book core of mass libraries", which took place in the 1980s.

The library has a department of scientific and technical information (NTI), sectors of culture, local history and art.

In the 1990s, during the period of "optimization" in the Almaty region, many city, district, and rural libraries were closed, book collections and staffing tables were reduced. Budget allocations for libraries from the State have been reduced, especially for the replenishment of the book fund.

Thus, there were 55 libraries in the Almaty region.

In 1999, the regional library for children and youth was reduced, and book collections were added to the Almaty Regional Universal Scientific Library.

In 1999-2000, regional libraries worked in new directions. For the first time, paid services were introduced into librarianship, automation and computerization of library processes began. Almaty regional libraries have implemented the project "Model Rural Library", the Ili district Library has become one of the first.

They took an active part in the republican conference "Library Capital-2001".

On April 28, 2003, the regional universal scientific library was transferred from Almaty to Taldykorgan and received the status of the State Institution "Almaty Regional Library named after S. Seifullin".
