The Akmola Regional Universal Scientific Library named after M. Zhumabayev was opened by the decision of the regional executive Committee on February 15, 1946, on the basis of the Central City Library with a book collection of 7 thousand copies of books. The bibliographic department and the literature processing department were opened.
Since 1971, the library has had a standard building. Since 1992, the library has been named after the Kazakh poet, translator, teacher, leader of the Alash movement, one of the founders of modern Kazakh literature – Magzhan Zhumabayev.
In 2005, the Department of Automation and New technologies was established at the M. Zhumabayev OUN.
In 2010, in order to improve the quality of library events, the Department of Mass work and public relations was established at the M. Zhumabayev AOUNB.
In January 2011, the department of literature in foreign languages was opened, in March – the department of children's literature.
The library's fund is 337,938 copies, of which 88,136 copies are in the state language.
The fund of rare books is 1,302 copies, of which 71 are in the state language
