This is a performance about one of the most romantic and tragic love stories of the 19th century. The story of the relationship between George Sand and Frederic Chopin still attracts attention. The new production was remembered by the audience not only for the touching plot, which included a meeting and separation, difficult family relationships, but also for the original choreographic language, scenography and, of course, Chopin's soulful music.
The ballet "December Rain" was staged by choreographer and production designer Kristina Paulin from Germany. This is not her first work at the Astana Ballet Theatre. She was also remembered by the audience for the performance "Orpheus and Eurydice". The choreographer once again chose a love story filled with irreparable losses, shattered hopes and suffering. Sand and Chopin's romance lasted about 10 years. This rather large period of time, from the moment they met until the breakup of their relationship, is reflected in the two-act ballet.
Kristina Paulin managed to show in the performance both the noisy secular salons of Paris, where Chopin performed, and scenes of family life in Mallorca or Noan, which, as it turned out, were full of passions, secrets and scandals. Telling the story of the relationship between the writer and the composer, the choreographer involved most of the theatre's troupe, which made it possible to deploy ensembles, duets and solo variations of the characters on the stage. The parts of Sand and Chopin in the performance were performed by Honored Worker of Kazakhstan Tatyana Ten and Wesley Carvalho, as well as Honored Worker of Kazakhstan Ainur Abilgazin and Sundet Sultanov.
Chopin's music is as much a full-fledged hero of the performance as the artists. It was performed by Margus Riimaa from Estonia. The pianist became not just an accompanist, but an active participant in the performance. The famous melodies fully conveyed the sublime feelings and impeccable taste of the composer. Thanks to Chopin's exquisite and refined music, the love story of two geniuses became a poignant story about fleeting happiness, about a huge, mesmerizing world filled with sounds and feelings.
