The Astana Ballet Theatre will present the ballets "Two Carpets" and "Carmina Burana" in Almaty.

From May 2nd to 8th, the Astana Ballet will host its annual tour at the Almaty Theatre. The capital's company will present two productions from recent seasons to Almaty audiences: the two-act ballet "Two Carpets" and the ballet-cantata "Carmina Burana."

The tour program reflects the theater's commitment to updating its repertoire and exploring a contemporary theatrical language. This year, Almaty audiences will be treated to performances never before presented at this venue.

The tour will open on May 2nd with the ballet "Two Carpets," which premiered last fall. The production is based on the ancient Azerbaijani legend of the Shirvan carpet and is constructed as a large-scale stage canvas, in which the patterns become a metaphor for human destiny, memory, and emotion. At the center of the plot is a love story that has endured through years, trials, war, and separation. The libretto and inspiration for the project is Valery Kopeikin, and the director and choreographer is Alexander Mogilev.

The tour will culminate with performances of the ballet-cantata "Carmina Burana" on May 7 and 8. This production, which was named "Best Production of 2025," brings together ballet, choir, orchestra, and soloists on a single stage. The performance explores the eternal themes of love, temptation, spiritual choice, and the confrontation between creative and destructive forces. The production's imagery is inspired by the music of Carl Orff and the aesthetics of Renaissance artists.

The choreographers for "Carmina Burana" are Mukaram Abubakhrieva and Timur Zagidullin. The orchestra, choir, and soloists will provide musical accompaniment under the direction of Principal Conductor Arman Urazgaliev. The production also features opera soloists Adil Sultan, Talgat Allabirinov, and Firuza Rakhmetova.
