"International Museum Day" is celebrated annually around the world on May 18. Traditionally, on this day, the State Museum of Arts of the Republic of Kazakhstan named after Abylkhan Kasteev prepares a rich program for viewers with exhibitions, concerts, excursions, master classes and interactive events. The purpose of the "Night at the Museum" project is to promote cultural heritage in the museum space and attract a wide audience.
The organizers of the festive artistic and cultural event "Night at the Museum – 2024" set the main task of popularizing the arts, introducing the museum collection and attracting residents of the city to museum programs. A significant event in 2024 was the publication of the catalog "The Art of Japan. XVII-XXI centuries." and the opening of an exhibition of Japanese art from the funds of the A. Kasteev State Museum of Arts of the Republic of Kazakhstan, in connection with this, this year the project is dedicated to the rich culture of Japan, its refined art and philosophy.
"We are convinced that the publication of the catalog of Japanese art from the collection of the leading art museum of Kazakhstan will become an additional bridge in strengthening and enhancing international cultural interaction between our countries," says the director of the museum Gulaim Musagulovna Zhumabekova. The collection includes about 250 works, many of which were transferred to the museum starting in 1936 from the State Museum of Art of the Peoples of the East, the Central State Museum of Kazakhstan, the Tselinograd Regional Museum of Local Lore, etc.
An interesting program awaits visitors on this day: a fair of masters and plein air on the territory of the museum, a screening of the film "Kusama: Infinite Worlds" (directed by Heather Lenz) in the conference hall, interactive games in the Japanese style, excursions to the permanent sections of the exhibition, thematic master classes.
An important event in the framework of the international "Museum Day" will be the opening of the exhibition "History of the Bride" (2008) from the manga series by the famous artist Kaoru Mori. She invites viewers to plunge into the rich history of Central Asia in the 19th century. In 2022, this manga was exhibited at the International Manga Museum in Kyoto as part of the "anniversary project dedicated to the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Japan and five countries of Central Asia."
The exhibition will feature about 250 exhibits – works of graphics, metal, wood, ceramics, fabric, bone and glass. Also, as part of the exhibition, you can get acquainted with Japanese artifacts from the personal collection of Dosym Satpayev.
Interactive games and excursions in Kazakh, Russian and English are organized for those who wish to visit the exhibition. Master classes in origami, calligraphy and conversational Japanese are organized with the assistance of partners of the event – the Department of the Far East of KazNU named after Al-Farabi and the Japanese House Ichikawa.
