In Astana, "Romeo & Juliet" was presented in a new format

The Kazakh National Musical Drama Theater named after Kalibek Kuanyshbayev presented the premiere of one of the most famous plays of world classics – William Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet. The production is significant not only for its new artistic interpretation of the immortal tragedy but also for its new format. The play is created in the genre of cinema-epic, combining the expressive possibilities of theater and cinema. The translation of the play into Kazakh belongs to the classic of Kazakh literature Abish Kekilbayev.

The production of Romeo & Juliet became precisely such an example of artistic synthesis. The cinema-epic format allows the combination of the scale of cinematic expressiveness with the depth of live theatrical experience. Thanks to this, the audience not only watches the plot but also immerses themselves in a special artistic space where music, lighting, movement, and acting form a single emotional canvas.

For the production, Russian theater and film director Ulanbek Bayaliev was invited to the capital. He is known for his bold interpretations of classical dramaturgy and a modern visual style. The production designer of the play was Kanat Maksutov. The audience was especially attracted by the expressive costumes created in collaboration between the theater and the fashion house JADO. The musical arrangement became a central element of the premiere. Live sound was provided by the theater band Theatre Avenue, led by Olzhas Dalelkhan.
