
A solemn ceremony of opening a street named after Mesrop Mashtots, a philosopher, linguist, and creator of the Armenian alphabet, took place in Astana.
The event was attended by Deputy Prime Minister - Minister of National Economy of the Republic of Kazakhstan Serik Zhumangarin, Deputy Prime Minister of the Republic of Armenia Mher Grigoryan, Minister of Culture and Information of the Republic of Kazakhstan Aida Balayeva, Minister of Education, Science, Culture and Sports of the Republic of Armenia Zhanna Andreasyan, representatives of the Armenian diaspora, as well as public figures.
The opening of Mesrop Mashtots Street in Astana was announced during the official visit of the Head of State Kassym-Jomart Tokayev to Yerevan in April 2024.
In her welcoming speech, the Minister of Culture and Information of the Republic of Kazakhstan emphasized that the opening of Mesrop Mashtots Street is a new symbol of friendship and the common desire of the two peoples to strengthen mutual understanding and cultural unity.
"Today's event is a tribute to the Armenian people and evidence of our friendship. In April of this year, a park named after the great poet Abai Kunanbayuly was opened in Yerevan. Now this place will serve to honor the invaluable heritage of the Kazakh thinker. And today, opening Mesrop Mashtots Street in Kazakhstan, we symbolically respond to this gesture, confirming that spiritual heritage is a space where our cultures meet, like the waters of two large rivers, mutually enriching each other," said Aida Balayeva.
Welcoming the participants of the ceremony, Zhanna Andreasyan said that mentioning the name of the Armenian scientist opens a new bright page in the history of mutual respect, friendship and cultural cooperation between our peoples.
"In Yerevan, in Abai Park, and now here, on Mashtots Street, bridges are being created between two cultures, through which not only names are transmitted, but also values - peace, education, creativity and friendship. Armenia and Kazakhstan, with their history, heritage of great thinkers and aspiration to the future, have always been in an atmosphere of complementary and mutually enriching cooperation. I am sure that the opening of Mashtots Street is a new stage in deepening cultural and educational ties between our peoples," said the Minister of Education, Science, Culture and Sports of the Republic of Armenia.
It should be noted that the event took place as part of the official visit of the Prime Minister of Armenia Nikol Pashinyan.
Mesrop Mashtots is a key figure in the history of Armenia. His educational activities laid the foundation for the national written culture, and became an impetus for the development of education, spiritual literature, which contributed to the preservation of the historical identity of the Armenian people.
