The Astana Opera ballet troupe returns to Dubai with The Nutcracker

After the resounding success of the performance last year, the Dubai Theater once again invited the Kazakh troupe, headed by the artistic director of the Astana Opera ballet troupe, world ballet star Altynai Asylmuratova. This year the theater has prepared six shows – December 19, 20, 21 and 22, which will take place on the stage of the Dubai Opera with the support of the Ministry of Culture and Information of the Republic of Kazakhstan. The Astana Opera Symphony Orchestra will perform under the direction of Italian maestro Giuseppe Acquaviva.

The theater is located in the heart of Dubai, in an area called the "most prestigious square kilometer." In the 2024-2025 theatrical season, the Dubai Opera hosts more than 50 productions by leading international creative teams. Such groups as the La Scala Theater, the Rome Opera Theater, the Hungarian State Opera, the Chinese National Ballet and others have performed here.

"It is prestigious for any theater when it is invited, which means that the team is in demand, and its productions are of a high level. And this is indeed the case, because last year we received a lot of positive feedback after the performances. All the days of the Kazakh troupe's performances in the Dubai Opera hall, designed for 2,000 seats, were sold out, and it could not accommodate everyone who wanted to attend, the hype around the touring performances of the capital's theater was so great. This year there are no fewer people wishing to get acquainted with our work, so these performances are very responsible for us," said Galym Akhmedyarov, director of Astana Opera, Honored Worker of Kazakhstan.

The production by Yuri Grigorovich, one of the greatest choreographers of our time, has transformed P. Tchaikovsky's The Nutcracker into a masterpiece of ballet art. The play tells a magical Christmas story, and also reveals such philosophical themes as love and growing up. In the words of critics, “there is no example in world musical literature that corresponds to the process of maturation of the soul of a girl playing with dolls, to the first dawns of love through dreams of a brave, courageous hero – the process of “nurturing feelings”.”

“Touring is a powerful incentive for artists, as well as an opportunity to show their skills to an international audience, an opportunity for growth and exchange of experience. This is always a step forward, because each trip is a special impulse for creativity. In addition, it strengthens cultural ties, because art, like a bridge, unites people, and we are happy to be part of this process. We are inspired by the fact that our work and creativity are in demand and interesting to viewers outside the Astana Opera Theater. This gives strength and the desire to develop further,” said People's Artist of Russia, artistic director of the Astana Opera ballet troupe Altynai Asylmuratova.

This ballet has been in the theater's repertoire for exactly 10 years and before the tour, Yuri Nikolaevich Grigorovich's assistants – Ruslan Pronin and Oksana Tsvetnitskaya – worked on it together with the Astana Opera troupe to ensure that the choreography remained in its original form.

On these four December days, leading soloists of the theater, Honored Workers of Kazakhstan Aigerim Beketaeva, Baktiyar Adamzhan, Erkin Rakhmatullaev, laureates of international competitions Shugyla Adepkhan, Sofia Adilkhanova, Dias Kurmangazy, who will live on stage in the images of Marie and the Nutcracker Prince, will demonstrate their skills, taking the audience to the world of fairy tales and magic.
