An exhibition dedicated to the 150th anniversary of the artist Nicholas Roerich has opened in Almaty

The museum's "Russian Art" hall presents four works from the artist's early St. Petersburg period: "Polovtsian Camp", "Ominous", "Meheski - the Lunar People" and "Giantess Krimgerd". The paintings have been exhibited at international exhibitions - in St. Petersburg and in the capital of Kazakhstan in Astana, the museum's press service reports.

As the head of research and art expeditions in Central Asia, he studied the East and its culture, embodying the collected knowledge in paintings and books. In 1926, the artist visited Kazakhstan and left a detailed description in his diaries, which later formed the basis of his travel essay "Altai-Himalayas".

The museum also hosted a round table "N.K. Roerich. Peace through Culture", where visitors got acquainted with the stages of the artist's life and work at the eponymous stand exhibition.

Roerich Nicholas Konstantinovich (9.10.1874 – 13.12.1947) – artist, scientist, traveler, writer, public and cultural figure, thinker. Created more than 7000 paintings. Author of monumental and decorative works in a number of cathedrals, churches (painting, mosaic), author of sketches of scenery and costumes for more than 20 theatrical productions, including in collaboration with S. Diaghilev in the "Russian Seasons". He headed research and art expeditions to Central Asia. In 1926, he visited the territory of Kazakhstan as part of the Central Asian expedition. He founded several cultural centers in New York, and the Urusvati Research Institute in India. He headed the international public movement for the protection of Culture in the 30s of the twentieth century. Initiator of the Pact on the Protection of Cultural Values, which went down in history as the Roerich Pact. An outstanding figure of Culture of the twentieth century.

Nicholas Roerich stood at the origins of many cultural initiatives that are relevant today. Among them is the international movement he initiated on the role of culture in the lives of peoples, the protection of cultural objects as an important and necessary connection of times. The symbol of this movement was the Banner of Peace, an ancient sign whose history goes back to ancient times. It is found on the mysterious rock paintings of Asia, in temple paintings, paintings by old masters, coats of arms and emblems. Everywhere it was given special protective significance. The Roerich Pact formed the basis of the modern international system of cultural protection. April 15, the day the Pact was signed in 1935 by the countries of the Pan-American Union, the world celebrates International Day of Culture.

The exhibition will last until April 30, 2024.
