In recent years, there has been a growing interest in theater among young people in Kazakhstan. Excerpts from performances are increasingly appearing on social networks, gaining popularity, and there is a kind of "cultural competition" between theaters. It is especially pleasing that the stage is gaining new momentum, and the audience is becoming more demanding.
The Zhastar Theater in the capital has launched a new creative project that combines literature and theater. Its goal is to strengthen the creative connection between the two arts, bring adapted dramatic works to the stage, and support young authors of modern Kazakh literature. The initiative will bring together poets, prose writers, and playwrights, creating a new space at the intersection of genres and artistic forms.
— Theater is not just a production, it is a place where complex thoughts are born and where the viewer meets himself. Previously, it was enough for us to leave the hall in a good mood, but today this is not enough. People are changing, and now the viewer wants to see the hero of his time on stage, to feel his experiences. Culture, and in particular theater, has gone through various stages of development and is now experiencing a moment of rethinking. We noticed that literature and theater have moved away from each other and decided to fill this gap. Together with directors, theater specialists and young authors, we have developed a project that will become a permanent platform for exchanging ideas and analyzing performances, - said poet and deputy director of the Zhastar Theater Makpal Mysa.
As part of the project, an open competition "New Wave - New Drama" has been announced. Authors who are ready to present a small play, a poetic cycle, a monodrama, a short prose or a stage novella can take part in it.
— Today, directors are looking for new texts and new authors, but often cannot find them. We want to become a bridge between them and young playwrights, to open up new opportunities for both sides. Works are accepted until October 25, and the results will be announced at the end of the year. The winners will receive special prizes, and the best works selected by the theater's artistic council will be staged. In addition, young playwrights will be able to work in a creative residence with actors, participate in rehearsals and stage laboratories, - added Mysa.
Following the results of the project, all collected works will be included in the collection "Sahnaǵa jańa sóz" ("A new word for the stage"), which will be transferred to theaters throughout the country.
— We are confident that the result of this work will be appreciated not only by the audience of the Zhastar Theater, but also by the theatrical community of Kazakhstan as a whole. This collection will be a real find and nourishment for directors, - concluded Makpal Mysa.
