March 27th marks World Theatre Day. For Kazakhstan, this date is not only a professional holiday for stage workers but also an opportunity to celebrate the progressive development of theatrical art, growing audience interest, and the expansion of creative activity in domestic theaters.
Today, there are more than 70 theaters operating in the country, 57 of which are state-owned. These include 11 national and 46 regional theaters. These figures clearly reflect the significant role of theater in the country's cultural life and confirm the public's enduring interest in the performing arts.
The results of last year also demonstrate positive dynamics. Thus, in 2025, state theaters premiered 410 new productions. Furthermore, theaters in the republic staged 539 tours, including 495 within Kazakhstan and 44 abroad. A total of 16,000 productions were presented during the year, attended by 2,832,835 spectators. The development of the theatrical industry is confirmed not only by internal activity but also by recognition at festival venues. In 2025, domestic theatrical artists participated in 101 international festivals and competitions, as well as 90 national festivals and competitions. As a result of these events, 13 productions by Kazakhstani theaters were awarded Grand Prix and Best Performance awards.
This positive trend continues this year. In the first quarter of 2026, national theaters have already served 170,927 spectators, demonstrating stable audience demand and high audience engagement.
Since the beginning of the year, national theaters have already premiered the plays "Korgansyz," "Kazakh Comedy Not Bonaparttyn Uylenuі," and "Sholpannyn Kunәsі." A number of premieres and special projects have also been prepared for World Theatre Day. These include the play "Bolero X" at the Astana Ballet Theatre, the "Altyn Saqa – 2026" festival of new productions and "Theater Night" at the Gabit Musrepov Theatre, the premiere of the comedy "Marriage (An Absolutely Improbable Dream)" at the Mikhail Lermontov Theatre, and the play "Revolt of the Daughters-in-Law" at the Quddus Kuzhamyarov Uyghur Musical Comedy Theatre.
