Cinema without borders: secrets of the first competition day films

On the first day, viewers watched 4 films: "We need to make films about love" (Russia, India, 2022) "Nirvana" (Bangladesh, 2022), "Where the Cranes Dance" (Republic of Sakha, Russia) and "Melody" (Tajikistan and Iran).

At the meeting with the creators of the films, the directors and producers shared unique stories about the creation of their films and revealed the secrets behind their projects.

Asif Islam, director of the film "Nirvana", said that the film was shot in Bangladesh and took two years to make. The idea of the film is that it has no dialogue.

"Bangladesh is a densely populated country where it is very noisy, a lot of information, especially verbal. Therefore, we cut out all the dialogues in order to focus on the internal emotions of the characters. The inspiration for the film came from the artists of the Renaissance. We wanted to create the effect of a picture on canvas - static, but deep," added Asif Islam.

Valeria Motorueva, producer of the film "Where the Cranes Dance", noted that this film became the third highest grossing film in the Republic of Sakha. Point screenings were held in Russia and at other film festivals.

"Its festival history continues and will continue next year. The magic of Yakut cinema is in its sincerity. Here people work with a small budget, often with their own funds. Today, a director can shoot, tomorrow he can be a driver, and the day after tomorrow he can be an editor. Everyone helps each other, which makes the movie truly soulful," said the producer.

In addition, she spoke about the work of composer Moses Kobyakov: "This is something outstanding. He created the soundtrack for a long time, adding the last elements after the end of computer graphics. His music perfectly complements the visual tension of the film."

Director of the film "Melody" Behruz Sebt Rasul talked about his film:

"The film was shot in Iran and Tajikistan. This is a poetic story about a girl who, with the help of birdsong, must create a melody. The film has already been nominated by Tajikistan for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film."

The first day of the competition programs set a high bar for future screenings. The films illustrate how cinema is able to overcome cultural boundaries and speak to audiences in the language of emotions.
