Almaty hosted the large-scale "Night at the Opera" project, a vibrant conclusion to the 92nd season of the Kazakh National Opera and Ballet Theatre named after Abai.
The concert took place in an open-air format on the square in front of the theatre and attracted over 5,000 residents and visitors. For one evening, the space in front of the theatre was transformed into an open-air stage, where classic works of world and national opera were performed.
The project has become part of Almaty's new cultural rhythm. Previously, Head of State Kassym-Jomart Tokayev noted the need to develop the city as a metropolis that operates around the clock to serve the interests of residents and visitors. "Night at the Opera" demonstrated the city's strong interest in cultural events in open urban spaces.
The evening's program included excerpts from the operas "Birzhan-Sara," "Abai," "Aida," "Turandot," "La Traviata," "La Bohème," "The Barber of Seville," "Norma," "Samson and Delilah," and other works. Carl Orff's "O Fortuna" and the song "Gul Almatym" were also performed, which the artists sang together with the audience.
Over 200 artists participated in the project, including leading soloists, the choir, and the theater's symphony orchestra. Conductors included Nurzhan Baibusinov and Kuanysh Ismailov. The choir was trained by chief choirmaster Aliya Temirbekova. Natalia Kagadiy and Alua Sabo directed the performance.
