Astana Ballet Theatre has opened its 14th theatrical season with “Two Carpets,” a production inspired by an ancient Azerbaijani legend about a Shirvan carpet. The production marked the first performance of the new season. On September 5, the programme will continue with the rock ballet “Blind Forgiveness,” and in the near future the company will embark on a tour of Austria, where it will present both productions.

In “Two Carpets,” the traditional art of carpet weaving becomes part of the dramatic narrative, while the ornamentation takes on symbolic meaning: lines and patterns preserve the memory of human destinies, emotions, and hardships endured.

At the heart of the story is a love that began in youth and endured wars, separation, and loss. Despite the years and distances between them, the protagonists maintain their connection and eventually regain hope of being reunited. Through their stories, the production explores themes of love, memory, devotion, and the human ability to preserve hope even in the most difficult circumstances.

The libretto was written by Valery Kopeykin. Director and choreographer Alexander Mogilev has brought the ancient legend into a contemporary stage setting, combining classical ballet technique with a modern choreographic language. Dance becomes one of the principal means of revealing the characters and advancing the dramatic action.

The next production of the 14th season will be the rock ballet “Blind Forgiveness,” which the theatre will present on September 5. The production combines contemporary choreography, expressive drama, and the energy of rock music.

Following its performances in Astana, the theatre will continue its international touring activities. In Austria, international audiences will be presented with the productions “Two Carpets” and “Blind Forgiveness.”
