The Kazakh National Opera and Ballet Theatre named after Abai is concluding its 92nd season with a series of events. The program includes the two-day "Night at the Opera" project, the premiere of the ballet "Uly Zhibek Zholy," and a revamped stage version of the opera "Abai."
This is the first time the theatre has presented the "Night at the Opera" project in this format. On June 25, an open-air concert featuring a symphony orchestra, choir, and leading soloists will take place in the square in front of the theatre. The program will feature works by Carl Orff, Pyotr Tchaikovsky, Gioachino Rossini, and Pietro Mascagni, as well as the aitys scene from the opera "Birzhan and Sara" and Abai's song "Ayttym sälem, Qalamqas." The concert will conclude with a joint performance of the song "Gül Almatym."
The following day, the project will continue at the ARTE Gallery. A chamber vocal program featuring works from world and national classics will be held in the theater's historic building.
One of the main events of the season's closing ceremony will be the premiere of the ballet "Uly Zhibek Zholy," scheduled for June 27. The production is inspired by the history of the Great Silk Road and explores the theme of cultural interaction between East and West through the language of dance. The concept, libretto, and choreography were created by People's Artist of Kazakhstan and director of the theater's ballet troupe, Gulzhan Tutkibayeva.
The season will conclude with the premiere of a revamped stage version of Akhmet Zhubanov and Latif Hamidi's opera "Abai," scheduled for June 28. This production retains the musical and literary foundations of the original, while offering a new dramatic and visual approach.
